Our Founding StorySecond Family, Inc. (SFI) was founded 1994 by Shilda Frost, with the help of her family and friends, as a non-profit organization to provide care for children abandoned to live in hospitals and nursing homes most of their lives due to their medical conditions.
Shilda, a Registered Nurse with more than 40-years of nursing experience, had been a foster parent specializing in caring for medically-fragile children for approximately 15 years; eventually adopting two of the children. Medically-fragile children became her motivation to open SFI; and she, with the help of her family and friends, wanted to provide a home-like environment where many other special needs children could live as normal a life as possible within their limitations. |

From Dream to Expansion: Our Growth JourneyShilda dreamed of having homes throughout the community in the state of Maryland providing daily loving care for children with medically-fragile and special needs. Shilda, and her family and friends, assembled a team of professionals; and with this inspiration her vision became a reality. In 1998 SFI opened its doors with one home and three children.
Today SFI has expanded to 10 homes and presently occupies two separate campuses in Capital Heights, MD and Bowie, MD. SFI is now able to provide residential and therapeutic services including 24-hour, 365 days per year nursing care for 24 medically-fragile, technology-dependent, and Intellectually- developmentally-disabled (IDD) children ages 0-20 and 9 months. |
